- Brushing Wet Hair
Hair is weaker when wet. Therefore, if you’re brushing your locks straight after washing them, you are more likely to cause hair breakage. Instead, try and let your hair dry completely before brushing, or if you must, opt for a wide-tooth comb to detangle.
- Washing Your Hair Too Often
Washing your hair daily is probably doing it more harm than good. It strips your hair of essential oils, drying your scalp and follicles faster. The scalp produces oils that travel down the hair shaft, locking in hydration. Shampooing too often washes away these oils before they travel, leaving hair dry and more prone to breakage.
- Wearing Your Hair Too Tight
Yes, high ponytails are on trend right now, but wearing your hair too tightly can promote breakage, and in some cases, even hair loss. Tight braids can also be a cause for concern with the rise in traction alopecia. Try looser styles and wearing your hair down when at home, giving your locks the much-needed relief, they need to grow healthy.
- Not Using a Heat Protector
Shielding your hair from hot styling tools such as blow dryers and hair straighteners by using a heat protectant is a must to keep hair super-healthy. If you can also avoid using the highest heat setting.
- Sun Damage
Much like protecting your hair from styling tools, you should also protect your locks from UV exposure. Whether it’s a leave-in conditioner or specialised UV protectant, if you’re planning a day in the sun, it’s time to protect your tresses as well as your skin. It is also wise to apply sunscreen to your scalp for extra protection.
